What is this?
I spend a lot of time with my hands in the dirt, growing food for my family here in the hills of Northern Slovenia. So much of my life revolves around the seasons of growth, as it relates to the vegetable garden in this climate, and I’ve found a lot of wisdom in that focus. Like how rest is essential, in one form or another, or how mushrooms speak to me sometimes, or how wild thyme can actually take me back in time. I want to share my thoughts on growing food while also growing myself and my family. The growing season never really ends, does it?
Who writes this newsletter?
My name is Camilla. I like to write and occasionally overshare, and I’ve been doing it for over 15 years through blogs and various online publications. I’m an American who is currently living in rural Slovenia. A few years ago my husband and I sold our house (that we built) just outside of Seattle, packed up our two daughters, three animals, and about 30% of our belongings (we sold and gave away the rest), and moved to a very small cottage in the countryside of Northern Slovenia, just along the Austrian border, where my husband grew up. I enjoy growing and cooking good food, especially North African cuisine (I’m half-Algerian), foraging for porcini mushrooms, and trying to master sourdough bread-making. I’m an over-thinker, a dreamer, and generally a wide-open book. Mostly, I’m grateful for those qualities, but they tend to cause me trouble (usually in the form of fear and worry). I can feel that it’s time for me to evolve, acquire some wisdom, and continue my life with an open spirit.
